March from 'Power Deficiency to Power Sufficiency'

January 10,2009

Haryana has total installed generation capacity of 4051.28 MW. Out of this, 1587.4 MW is located within the State of Haryana at the thermal power stations in Panipat and Faridabad and a small component at the hydro electro station at Yamuna Nagar.

On a given date, available capacity of power varies between 2200 MW and 3000 MW during different seasons. It is dependant upon inflows at hydro stations/planned/forced post-outages of the generation. As againt this, demand varies from 3000 to 5000 MW in various seasons and during peak and off-peak hours. In addition, demand of electricity is increasing @ 8% to 11% per year on account of rapid industrialization, urbanization of NCR region and increased demand in agriculture sector.

Non-availability of electricity is a principal issue of governance and primary reason for political failure of successive governments in Haryana, leading to widespread unrest among the people. Despite this, successive governments failed to install additional power capacity in shape of setting up of new power stations.

A bold new initiative has been launched to ensure the march of Haryana from ‘Power Deficiency to Power Sufficiency’ by adding 5,870.8 MW of power. An investment of over Rs.21,342 crores is under way in setting up of new power plants detailed below:-
