Randeep Singh Surjewala was born on 3 June 1967 in Chandigarh into a family with a rich legacy of public service. As the youngest of four children, he grew up inspired by his father, Late Ch. Shamsher Singh Surjewala – former President of the Haryana State Congress Commitee, 5 times MLA & 1 time MP, Cabinet Minister for Agriculture & Co-operatives, Irrigation & Power and Parliamentary Affairs of Haryana and a veteran parliamentarian. His educational journey began in the rural milieu at Adarsh Bal Mandir and Arya Higher Secondary School in Narwana, District Jind, Haryana. He later earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons. in Advanced Accounts) from DAV College, followed by a LL.B from the Faculty of Law at Punjab University, Chandigarh and a Master’s Degree in Political Science. Later, Randeep became the first ever President of Indian Youth Congress from Haryana, Secretary of the AICC (In Charge of Uttar Pradesh), Working President of Haryana PCC, Cabinet Minister in Haryana for a decade, Head of AICC Communications and then General Secretary of Indian National Congress.
Rise & Leadership
Stepping into politics at a young age, Randeep Singh Surjewala quickly emerged as a leader in his own right. His entry into electoral politics turned out to be baptism by fire, when he fought and lost against Shri Om Prakash Chautala from the Narwana Assembly in the year 1993. Undetered, he continued to serve the people. It paid dividends in the year 1996, when he was elected as an MLA from the Narwana Assembly, District Jind, Haryana, at the age of 29, after defeating Shri Om Prakash Chautala, former Chief Minister.
In 2000, he was appointed President of the Indian Youth Congress and continued in this role until 2005, marking the longest tenure in the history of the organization and first for any Haryanavi post independence. In 2004, he was appointed Working President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) and played a key role in leading the Congress to victory in Haryana, with the party securing 67 out of 90 Assembly seats—the highest ever in the state’s history. In 2005, he was appointed Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), In – Charge of Uttar Pradesh .
In 2005, Randeep Singh Surjewala was again elected as an MLA from Narwana, District Jind, Haryana, after defeating the then sitting Chief Minister, Shri Om Prakash Chautala. He went on to become the youngest Cabinet Minister in Haryana and held several key portfolios for nearly a decade, including Transport, Parliamentary Affairs, Water Supply and Sanitation, Electronics & Information Technology, Science & Technology, Public Works Department, Power, and Civil Aviation, among others.
In 2009 and again in 2014, he was elected as an MLA from the Kaithal Assembly Constituency in District Kaithal, Haryana, with overwhelming margins.
On 5th March 2015, he was appointed Chief Spokesperson and Head of the Communication Department of the Indian National Congress. In 2020, he was appointed General Secretary of the Indian National Congress and has continued in this role up to 2026. During this period, he has been in charge of Karnataka and has also served as General Secretary In-Charge of Madhya Pradesh, as well as a Senior Observer for Bihar and Rajasthan.
On 10 June 2022, he was elected as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha (Rajasthan), with his term commencing on 5 July 2022.

He has represented the concerns of citizens both inside and outside Parliament, advocating for transparency, inclusive development, and constitutional values. Through his work as a parliamentarian, spokesperson, and party strategist, he has remained actively engaged with grassroots issues while contributing to broader national policy debates.
