'Chautala Wasting money on Devi Lal's anniversary': Surjewala

Typical of Haryana Chief Minister, Sh.Om Prakash Chautala’s hedonistic individualism and fake sense of grandeur, Lok Dal Government of Haryana observed the Birth Anniversary of Late Ch. Devi Lal on 25th September, 2003 by unashamedly spending over 10 crores, more then half of which came from the coffers of public exchequer and the rest half was collected through coercive recovery from traders, grain merchants, businessmen and even government employees.

Public and private properties all over the state were cruelly and criminally defaced by painting of slogans eulogizing Sh. Chautala and his sons. Corruption was institutionalized with civil (particularly employees of Departments of Transport, PWD (B&R), Excise, Food and Civil Supplies and Revenue) and police officials contributing astronomical sums of money towards arranging men, their transportation and other provisions for the rally. Broads HDDC, HDFC issued tenders worth 300 lakhs for putting up Hoardings, Cantilever Boards or Signage Boards Propagating Sh. Chautala and the rally. Rather then paying tributes to Late Ch. Devi Lal, it became a personalized public relations jamboree of Sh. Chautala and Lok Dal.

We exposed this malfeasance of public funds and negation of Constitutional norms before the people of the state by releasing all details of the amount spent by government departments along with documentation. We also pointed out the marked simplicity with which similar occasions are observed on anniversaries of National leaders like Mahatama Gandhi, Smt. Indira Gandhi and sh. Rajiv Gandhi.
