KaithalNau Grah (Kunds)

As per legend, Lord Krishna commenced the epic war of Mahabharta by exhorting Dharamraj Yudhister to undertake a ‘Yagya’ in reverence of the nine planets (Nau-Grah) and construct a ‘Kund’ for each of the nine planets (Nau-Grah).

Dharamraj Yudhister accordingly constructed the following ‘Kunds’:-

  1. Shukra Kund
  2. Budh Kund
  3. Veer(Brahshpati) Kund
  4. Surya Kund
  5. Shani Kund
  6. Ketu Kund
  7. Chander Kund
  8. Rahu Kund
  9. Mangal (Bhom) Kund

In the ancient era, the pilgrims used to bathe on the pucca ghats of these Kunds. It is on account of historical and religious significance of taking a bath on the ghats of these Nau-Grah Kunds that the city was also known as Chhoti Kashi. With passage of time over centuries, four Kunds i.e. Chander Kund, Mangal (Bhom) Kund, Rahu Kund and Ketu Kund have ceased to exist.

Remaining five Kunds i.e. Surya Kund, Budh Kund, Veer (Brahspati) Kund, Shukra Kund and Shani Kund, which had also fallen into oblivion, have now been restored to their original glory by efforts of Kaithal MLA & Cabinet Minister, Randeep Singh Surjewala. Details of these five temples along with Kunds are given separately.
