Demonstration against Communal Politics by BJP, VHP and RSS
Indian youth Congress held a demonstration on 30th June 2000 to draw attention and protest against attacks on minorities, particularly Muslims and Christians, by BJP supported orgainisations like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and RSS out to vitiate the communal harmony. Our demand was also to impose a ban on such communal outfits spreading venom on religion grounds.
Youth Congress supporters were also protesting against encouragement of separatists tendencies by BJP leadership, including Shri Vajpayee and Shri Advani, by encouraging separatist forces in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab (Akali Dal of Shri Badal and Shri Tohra), Assam (AGP of Shri Prafulla Kumar Mohanta) and Tamilnadu (MDMK and PMK) particularly projection of dreaded terrorist V. Prabakaran as hero in presence of Home Minister Shri L. K. Advani knowing fully well that Prabakaran was chief conspirator in death of our revered leader and former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
Without reason or provocation, police lathicharged, used water cannons and plastic bullets on innocent youth Congress workers peacefully demonstrating in support of our demand. 57 youth Congress workers were also injured.
Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala along with 15 others were arrested and detained in Tihar Jail from 30th June 2000 till 3rd July 2000.
