Gherao of Haryana Assembly
June 12, 2001 Gherao of Haryana Assembly
With a view to expose politicisation of education; mass scale retrenchments of Class-III and Class-IV government employees employed during Congress regime; widespread bungling in purchase and sale of primary agricultural produce leading to distress sale, indebtedness and suicide by farmers; imposition of arbitrary taxes to the tune of 1000 crores in shape of entry tax, Form ST-38, trade tax, house tax, electricity tariff, enhanced water charges, etc.; total criminalisation of social and political structure by Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his two sons with organised mafia getting protection; Youth Congress organised a massive gherao of Haryana Legislative Assembly at Chandigarh on 12th June, 2001.
Thousands of youth activists had gathered at Matka Chowk near the Haryana Legislative Assembly. Autocratic designs of the government were exposed by youths protesting on aforementioned issues. IYC President, Sh. Randeep Singh Surjewala alongwith State Youth Congress President led the Rally-cum-March to the Assembly. In their usual style of stiffling democratic dissent; IYC President, Sh. Randeep Singh Surjewala, State Youth Congress President and some of youth activists were arrested, detained and were released after a few hours. However, youths in the State were able to effectively convey the anger of Haryana's populace against the draconian misrule of Chautala.
