'Jagriti Rally' in Ladwa, Haryana

Farming community, particularly sugarcane growers, are in acute distress in north India, especially in States of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in face of successive anti-farmer measures by Chautala and Mayawati government. Agitating farmers have been persecuted and lathicharged. Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) Protests and lathicharge, Gohana (Haryana) Sugar Mill firing, Saraswati (Haryana) Sugar Mill Lathicharge and Naraingarh (Haryana) Sugar Mill lathicharge are some of the cases in point.

Youth Congress organized a massive 'Jagriti Rally' in Ladwa - heart of sugarcane belt in Haryana. We pointed out the fact that Chautala government is constraining sugarcane farmers to sell their produce at a pittance of Rs. 70 per quintal against the announcement 'Minimum support Price' of Rs. 110 per quintal. Carriage charges of Rs. 5 to Rs. 15 per quintal are also being transferred to the poor farmer. Mills have also not paid dues of farmers running into crores of rupees.

We also exposed the that Naraingarh Sugar Mills, which has not paid farmer's dues worth over 12 crores, has been given a soft loan of 7 crores and in an unprecedented fashion, state government has become a guarantor of the loan amount of a private sugar mill for the first time in the history of the state. This is despite the fact that state government has moved government of India for taking over the mill and filed an affidavit in the High Court to this effect. Also, this defaulting mill has now been given a license for liquor distillery by Chautala government. Reason is the personal understanding reached between the Chief Minister and the mill owners. We are considering moving the High Court for investigation of this scam.

Thousands of youth enthusiastically participated.
