Bidkiyar (Vidhkiyar) Lake Complex

Bidkiyar Lake Beautification

‘Bidkiyar Lake’ is situated over an area of 28 acres in the heart of Kaithal City with the back drop of Kaithal Fort. Legend has it that in the pre-Mahabharata age, this entire area was parched with no availability of even drinking water for miles together in all directions. Bidkiyar, the farmer prayed to Lord Shiva for years. Lord Shiva appeared and gave a vow of abundance of water and fertility of soil, making the entire Kaithal-Kurukshetra belt fertile and full of water. Legend also has it that Lord Krishna and Pandavas prayed on the banks of Bidkiyar Lake before fighting the ‘Dharam Yudh’.

‘Bidkiyar Lake’ has been restored to its pristine glory by extensive cleaning of sewage, digging, stone pitching along with re-construction of all the ghats. Walk ways and lighting has been provided along with construction of a 2 feet high wall all around the lake complex. Fresh water has been provided by connecting Keorak Minor through under ground pipelines. Sewage of over 9,000 houses that used to fall in the lake for decades has been tapped through two under ground and over ground tanks by installing high velocity sewage lifting pumps.

For decades, this whole area was filled with sewage and was breeding ground for mosquitoes, bad odor and filth. This biggest turn around story of ‘Bidkiyar Lake Complex’ has cost Rs.900 lakh with persistent efforts of Randeep Singh Surjewala.

‘Bidkiyar Lake’ is now not only the biggest water recharge body but is visited by thousands of people everyday for its beauty, its history, its purity and its beautiful serene surroundings.
