Massive Rally against Casino Bill at Pehowa, Haryana
Haryana Assembly passed a 'Black Bill' titled as 'The Haryana Casino (Licensing and Control) Bill 2002' as also an amendment to the Public Gambling Act, 1867 making Haryana the first state in the country where gambling would not be an offense and seeking to open gambling dens all over the state for a fixed license fee.
We, at Youth Congress, had declared that we would not permit 'land of Gita' to become 'Land of Gambling Dens'. Youth Congress had earlier demonstrated in the Districts and had sent Memorandum addressed to the Governor of Haryana.
Pehowa, District Kurukshetra is the land where 'Discourse of Holy Gita' was given by 'Lord Krishna' to 'Arjun'. On 28th February, 2003; Youth Congress held a massive rally at Pehowa. Thousands of youth, farmers, traders and all other sections turned up to reiterate our commitment to fight Chautala Government and BJP out to wreck 'the culture and traditions' of Haryana. We challenged Chautala Government that 'Casinos and Gambling Dens' will not be permitted to operate in the state.
Shri Sunil Dutt, MP and Member of CWC was gracious enough to attend the rally along with IYC President, Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala supported the cause.
IYC President, Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala was pleased to inform that on the next day itself, governor of Haryana has refused to grant assent to the aforesaid two bills and have referred them to President of India, marking a major victory in our battle.
