Murderous Assault on IYC President in Chandigarh
Murderous Assault on IYC President during Gherao demonstration against Corruption
At the historic AICC Plenary Session held at Bangalore from 16th to 18th March, 2001, Hon'ble Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi had given a call to all Congressmen to wage a war against corruption. Accordingly, National Executive of Indian Youth Congress had decided to hold simultaneous demonstrations on 28th of March 2001 at all State Headquarters to expose the corruption ridden BJP-led NDA Government.
Massive simultaneous demonstrations were held at all State headquarters in the country on 28th March, 2001. Needless to add that demonstrations were overwhelmingly successful in terms of numbers, presence of senior Congress leaders and enthusiasm of grassroot Youth Congress workers to implement the 'fight to the finish' call given by the Hon'ble Congress President.
IYC President, Sh. Randeep Singh Surjewala led a joint agitation of States of Punjab and Haryana at Chandigarh. In execution of a pre-planned criminal conspiracy by Shri Om Prakash Chautala and S. Prakash Singh Badal, Chief Ministers of Haryana and Punjab, to physically injure Youth Congress friends; brutal unprovoked lathi charge was launched by commondos of Punjab and Haryana Police deputed for this purpose followed by pelting of bricks and stones by the police. Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala President, IYC, PYC Chief and 74 others suffered extensive fractures and head injuries with total number of injured Youth Congress workers being over 1000. Police also went on rampage and completely smashed 17 vehicles, belonging to Youth Congress friends, with bricks and lathis. Pelting of stones and brutal lathi charge was in fact recorded on video by Jain TV Channel which commented that it may be perhaps for the first time that police had come with a truck load of bricks in order to attack agitationists in such a brutal manner.
This is the umpteenth time that BJP Government and Government of its allies have used police machinery to stifle peaceful voice of democratic dissent of Youth Congress workers. IYC has taken this opportunity to reiterate and commit that such State sponsored goondaism would not deter us from following the path shown by Hon'ble Smt. Sonia Gandhi and the call of duty assigned by her and other senior Congress leaders.
