"Relief material for Border displaced in J & K"
Persistently escalating tension leading to reckless firing and shelling from across the line of control in Jammu & Kashmir has seen destruction of over 1000 villages in border areas rendering over 1.5 lakh people homeless constraining them to fend for themselves in open or scantly makeshift structures with government abdicating its solemn duty to provide even minimum necessities.
Smt. Sonia Gandhiji had directed us on 21st May, 2002 to undertake relief operations. IYC had, accordingly, undertaken a drive for mobilizing relief.
On 26th May, 2002; Shri Mukul Wasnik, General Secretary, AICC flagged off 8 truck loads of wheat (weighing 720 quintals approximately). This was duly received in Kathua, Jammu by PCC President, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad on 27th May, 2002 and distribution was effected.
On the anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru i.e.27th May, 2002; Youth Congress dispatched another 30 truck loads of wheat (weighing 2700 quintals approximately). Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Hon'ble Congress President assisted by IYC President, Sh. Randeep Singh Surjewala flagged off these relief trucks from AICC headquarters i.e. 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi. This consignment was also duly received and was distributed under the supervision and direction of PCC Chief Sh. Ghulam Nabi Azad.
