Youth Congress held a huge demonstration outside Parliament against hike in Petrol and Diesel Prices

With the onset of sowing season and immediately after the elections in four agriculturally rich states, BJP led NDA proceeded to unilaterally increase the prices of Diesel (by Rs. 1.07 per liter) and Petrol (by Rs. 1.37 per liter). While this arbitrary hike was made, ‘Minimum Support Price’ of wheat – mainstay of the injury, Government of India has decided to sell old stock of wheat at Rs. 750 to 780 per quintal to the mills and even export wheat at Rs. 652.50 per quintal.

Braving harsh cold weather conditions, over 10,000 activists of Youth Congress held a huge demonstration outside Parliament on 22nd December, 2003 protesting against arbitrary hike in prices of ‘petro-products’ and rampant unemployment. Besides the IYC President, Sh. Randeep singh Surjewala and other youth activists, rally was addressed by Sh. Moti Lal Vora, Treasurer, AICC.

As we peacefully proceeded towards Parliament, Delhi Police resorted to unprovoked lathi charge and manhandling of youth activists including girls. A dozen activists including the IYC President, Sh. Randeep Singh Surjewala and an IYC General Secretary and two IYC Secretaries were injured. While many were hospitalized; Ms. Babli Singh, IYC Secretary was kicked, assaulted and pulled by her hair by male members of Delhi Police. We also lodged a complaint of molestation and assault against the police. Such brutalities have only firmed our resolve to fight.
